All About The History Of Flower Delivery

Submitted by: crozon

Flowers will really suit any kind of occasion, whether it is for an anniversary, a birthday, a wedding, to congratulation someone or even those not so happy moments like a funeral. Thankfully with technology, today flower giving is a very simple affair. You log onto your favourite florist, choose your bouquet, pay with a credit card and send away. But flower giving wasn't always so simple, yet it has been around for ages.

The history of flower giving may date back to prehistoric times, as archaeologists all over the world have been finding flower remnants in gravesites. The first human recorded history, such as Egyptian hieroglyphics, Chinese writings, and Greek and Roman poetry, make references to flower giving in. From the 5th century to the 16th century giving flowers as a token to show expressions of love became popular, and by the 17th century an art form know as Floriography was developed.

Floriography, or the language of flowers, was used in the 17th century, or the Victorian era as it is also known as, as a means of communication in which certain flowers had specific meanings. The Victorians didn't really like to share their emotions, so this was a way of expressing their love without actually saying a word. Combining certain flowers into floral arrangements one could send a secret message to the recipient. The only problem with is there weren't really any best practises when it came to floriography. Many authors wrote their own Florigraphy books, and meanings changed with time. So it could very have happened that the recipient had a different version of the meaning. Oh how embarrassing.

Although the language of flowers has been mainly forgotten some of the meanings behind certain flowers are still true today. Some of the most popular flowers have the following meanings:

1 - Ivy can mean friendship
2 - Light pink roses are often to show admiration
3 - Magnolias stand for dignity
4 - Marigolds can show sacred affection
5 - Red and yellow roses can be given for congratulations
6 - Hibiscus can mean delicate beauty
7 - Holly is for foresight
8 - Tiger lily can mean wealth or pride
9 - Tulips are a symbol of the perfect lover
10 - White lily represents majesty and purity
11 - A dark pink rose can simply mean thank you
12 - A forget-me-not can represent faithful love
13 - A pale rose is another sign for friendship
14 - A pink rose represents love and grace
15 - Mistletoe is for affection and love
16 - Orchids are magnificence and love
17 - Red roses are for love and desire
18 - A sunflower is a way to show homage and devotion
19 - A water lily represents eloquence
20 - Gladiolus represents strength of character
21 - Iris is for faith and wisdom

The language of flowers may be lost, but their meaning and effect on the person receiving the flower delivery remains the same. Whether you are expressing your love, showing sympathy or just letting someone know you care, receiving a flower delivery is the best way to send that message without even saying a word.
