Internet Domain Incubation
Submitted by: KevinB
Internet domain incubation is a new strategy associated with attempting to increase the domain name resell value of a currently registered domain name. The strategy appears to have come from the major search engines applying an 'aging' penalty on newly registered domain names.
The purpose of a penalty on newly registered domain names is to ascertain the usefulness of a new website and to discount it as a spam site. This is the cause of many webmasters frustrations as there is no way to determine how long this penalty would be in place - or if there is an actual penalty in place.
Domain incubation has appeared in response to the search engines and normally the site management of a newly registered domain name is outsourced to third parties who will then build up a small website and add value to the actual domain name. The normal strategy of link building is undertaken and as the domain ages and gains inbound links the true domain owner will be busy developing content or increasing existing sites.
Internet domain incubation is not the same as domain parking. Domain parking would normally be provided by the hosting company or another service company and a newly registered domain name would find it difficult to build up natural traffic to benefit financially from parking services.
Domain name incubation provides a means to gradually increase the pagerank and traffic by displaying a basic webpage that is designed around the theme of the actual domain name. This can then be passed back to the domain name owner who will be in a much better position to capitalize on the traffic and provided they continue developing their site, it will quickly start picking up additional traffic naturally.
Through the process of aging, incubation of domain names will generate some money for the company providing the service in the form of adverts. However, it is not owned by that company and when regular traffic has been built up the domain name owner will take back ownership. The domain owner may opt for a domain parking service or further develop the niche content and increase the monetary return for their site quickly and with no effort spent on marketing the site.
Overall, the process of domain incubation is ethical when done correctly. It simply enables a webmaster to do what they do best - develop their content and website interaction, but takes away the some marketing and search engine optimizing aspects that are the downfall of many new webmasters.
The cost of domain names today is highly competitive and as a result many webmasters could have hundreds of domain names sitting idle and internet domain incubation is one method that can help webmasters hit the ground running when they are in a position to launch the actual website.
As always, there are many options available to webmasters looking to maximize their domain name value and as such there will be many winners and many losers in this type of investment. However, the associated risk is minimal to the webmaster, if non-existent, as a domain incubation service is normally provided free. The service provider will normally keep all advertising revenue as it is the provider who has the risk of not knowing when the domain owner will retake control of their domain name.
My personal view is that it could be a cheap method of marketing and search engine optimization if done correctly. Although I would strongly advise anyone considering internet domain incubation strategies to investigate the company providing the service to ensure they use only white hat SEO techniques to accomplish the traffic building and link building.
