Snoring is due to blockages in air passages reducing the oxygen intake for vital functioning of the body. This proves harmful to the person who snores and can lead air passages getting completely blocked also known as sleep apnea in medical terms. Frequent waking from sleep to get oxygen is the body's way of alerting against lack of oxygen.

The main reason that causes a person to snore is the relaxation of muscles of the throat, tongue and neck which lead to constriction of air passages and heavy vibration of soft tissues while breathing. The noise produced with every inhalation and exhale of air produces the sound which is known as snoring.

Snoring can be mild and just cause embarrassment to the snorer but the main symptoms of sleep apnea are:

- 10 seconds or more of interruptions in sleep due to the blockage in air ways.

- Frequent interruptions during sleeping.

- Deep REM sleep is not possible.

- Inability to concentrate for long due to low oxygen levels.

- Irritability and low libido

- Drowsiness during day effecting normal activities.

These symptoms of sleep apnea are signs of impending health problems such as high blood pressure, heart ailments and stress in personal relationships. Snoring results in low intake of oxygen making the heart pump faster which causes the blood pressure to rise. There are other health hazards associated with snoring leading medical complications.

The vicious cycle starts from snoring leading low oxygen levels to high blood pressure over a period of time. The poor sleep patterns result in irritability that starts to affect personal relationships and adds marital stress. Untreated snoring can even cause strokes and heart attacks, according to a recent study.If you think that your snoring is leading to sleep apnea, it is time to consult a doctor or a health care professional in your area.
