Game Addiction Symptoms
Submitted by: Latona
Ever since the first game was created there have been game addicts. The internet has provided an easier option for most people to access games and as such the responsibility of a parent should extend to be on guard for game addiction symptoms.
Some of the common signs or symptoms for game addiction are:
1. Grades at school have started slipping and your child is more lethargic than usual
2. All conversations initiated by the child involves some aspect of a particular game
3. Temper tantrums and mood swings are becoming a more regular occurrence while the child becomes more withdrawn and isolated from their circle of friends.
The above symptoms of game addiction are typical in most cases, however, it is not always as clear and is often more subtle. All parents should ensure children take regular breaks away from their computers and that they maintain their circle of friends away from the computer and gaming in general.
It is not only children that may be affected by any aspect of game addiction, but adults may also become enthralled by games and as such need to run checklist themselves for any symptoms relating to game addiction.
The most common signs or symptoms of game addiction that adults may experience are:
1. One parent staying later and later at work to stay on top of the workload as they have spent hours playing a game during the day.
2. Housework and chores are done less frequently or efficiently and the general state of the household is becoming more dilapidated.
3. Mood swings increase and parents begin to have more arguments than normal.
4. The concept of time is almost non existent or parents are unable to remember when they had logged onto the internet.
Generally the symptoms can be classified into two main categories, psychological or physical symptoms. The main psychological symptoms have been described above while the main physical symptoms are normally:
1. Irregular sleep patterns
2. Dry eyes
3. Carpal tunnel syndrome
4. Migraines, headaches and backaches
5. Personal hygiene levels deteriorate
Overall, games were designed to be fun, enjoyable and mildly addictive. Although the intent was never to deliberately make games addictive, it is the inevitable result of human competitive spirit and robotic brain functions that many people do become highly addicted to games. If you find that you or your children suffer any of the mentioned game addict symptoms, then take a few steps back and assess the real impact it is having on your lifestyle.
Always remember, games are meant to be fun, not meant to take the fun out of your life.
