Understanding the GRE vocabulary lists for a better test score

Submitted by: Chris Louis660

GRE vocabulary lists help students to excel

When you have to take your GRE exam, you may just sit down with a dictionary and write out the entire thing learning each word by heart. While this will help you to expand your vocabulary, it is not that helpful because you will probably have no idea of what the word can mean in a sentence and understand the origins of where it comes from and why it is used. This is why for many years; experts have been preparing GRE vocabulary lists for students to learn. These experts will give their opinions of what they expect to be included in the test so you don't sit for hours learning words that you don't need to.

The GRE vocabulary words that are chosen are meant to challenge the students that are applying for colleges and universities and working towards graduating in professional fields. This test is to ensure a higher education and a better, fuller understanding of the English language. The GRE vocab lists are compiled with the emphasis placed on not just memorizing the words but actually understanding them. This is why the GRE vocabulary list is written with a column for the origin of the word, the parts of speech and similar words as well as the meaning. Students are encouraged to learn how to use the words in sentences so that during the analogies and antonyms section of the test, they will be able to perform properly.

There are sections for homonyms as well, and by having a clear and comprehensive understanding of the word and how it is used, students can fare far better in the tests. The GRE vocabulary practice sessions should be done every day and you can have group sessions as well to practice using the words in the lists. The more you use them in your every day speaking, the more you will begin to understand them and remember them. It will also be easier to think of analogies for the words that might appear in the test and antonyms as well. As there is no legal way to know precisely what words are included in the GRE, various professionals and experts in the field have made these lists from pure educated guessing and by looking at what words have been used before. This is not to say that the same words won't be used again, but they try to give a broad spectrum of GRE vocabulary words so that you can use various sources including the past papers to learn from.

You can get the latest GRE vocabulary lists online from different sources as well as from different universities and colleges. Many of the lists can also be found by asking any graduate institutions near where you live. Try to find and use as many of the GRE vocabulary flash cards and lists as you can to have the best chance of high results, and to just improve your general vocabulary. Good luck!
