Emory Business Intranet
Submitted by: KevinB
Recently when browsing through a search engine I stumbled on the Emory Business Intranet, located in Atlanta, Georgia and may be better known as Goizueta Intranet to those who frequent it.
I started to think of the general implications and usefulness for any company, education establishment or entity that had the attention of large sections of the community at any given time. Plenty of companies already build and maintain an internal company intranet for communication with its staff. However, I feel the problem with most of these company intranets is solely the angle the business in question approaches the staff by trying to engage their staff and motivate higher sales coupled with greater loyalties.
In previous employment at different companies I have witnessed first hand some of the attempts by major corporate companies to 'brainwash' its employees to become drones. This causes the opposite effect to the company intentions. Instead of motivating and increasing staff loyalty the company intranet actually demotivates and discourages loyalty due to the severe restrictions in place and the lack of ability for the freedom of ideas and opinions.
My opinion is if any business or company overloads their employees with information praising the company and the benefits it will make the employee resent that company or business. There are security restrictions and it is a necessity for any company intranet, however, within these boundaries there is still ample scope for any company or business to be open to internal criticism and genuine feedback. It will serve the company better in the long term to focus on real employee issues and receive better and more accurate feedback via anonymous forms.
If a company intranet was set up and employees could express their true opinions (not those hidden due to being logged against their login name), then a company intranet would serve as a honest and endless employee feedback forum.
The actual Emory business intranet was just the spark that made me reflect on my own experiences, where a company was always seeking feedback via their own intranet. However, there was no anonymous option to give any real feedback - instead it was the usual company line and positive feedback that produced no real results.
The internet has evolved and so should any business or company and give their employees a true voice where there is no direct link to the feedback source. Only then will a company know the true feelings of the overwhelming majority of their employees.
